The Maybe Baby Saliva Ovulation Teaster has a specially designed mini-microscope that makes it so you are able to view your own saliva sample and from that help to determine the most fertile time in your reproductive cycle. It works because the level of oestrogen which is the female sex hormone, increases dramatically in the saliva two to three days before ovulation and reaches its peak during ovulation. High levels of oestrogen are evident when viewed through a microscope due to the saliva creating distinct patterns. These patterns help to determine which stage of your cycle you are in. If it is the non-fertile period then only pebbles or dots will be seen, if it is the transitional period leading up to ovulation then both pebbles and ferns will be seen, and if its the fertile period then a distintive full fern pattern only will be seen.
To help with conceiving, it is:
- Highly likely that you will conceive if you have intercourse one day before and up to one day after ovulation
- Likely that you will conceive if you have intercourse two to three days before and up to one day after ovulation
- Not likely that you will conceive if you have intercourse four to five days before and more than one day after ovulation
You can also increase the chances of having a specific gender child by timing your intercourse. If you are trying for a:
- Boy having intercourse the day of ovulation may increase your chances as male sperm swim faster but die sooner
- Girl having intercourse two to three days before ovulation and abstaining afterwards may increase your chances as female sperm swim slower but live longer

- Do NOT eat or drink (water is fine) for at least THREE HOURS before using, the ideal time to test is first thing in the morning before eating, drinking and brushing your teeth
- Remove the protective cover and pull the viewfinder from the housing
- Clean the flat internal surface of the viewfinder with the lint free cloth (do NOT use water or any cleaning product)
- Using a clean fingertip, place a smear of saliva over the flat internal glass surface of the viewfinder
- Make sure there are no bubbles of saliva on the lens
- Leave the saliva to dry for approximatley TEN MINUTES
- Replace the viewfinder
- Hold up to your eye and turn on the light switch at the base
- View results through the viewfinder
- If necessary, rotate the eyepiece until the patern is clear
- It is recommended that you record the results using the chart provided
- Reclean the internal surface of the viewfinder with the lint free cloth
